Speckled Wood

Look out for them in dappled sunlight of woodlands, gardens and hedgerows from April to October. Speckled Wood Facts: • Former names for the Speckled Wood include 'Wood Argus' - Argus was a shepherd in Greek mythology who had many eyes - and Enfield Eye. • Individuals of this species found in the north are darker in colour with whiter spots whereas those in the south and into Europe are lighter with more orange markings • This is one of the few butterfly species that is doing well; it is thought this could be due to a reduction in coppicing in woodlands and also an abundant availability of its larval foodplants: common grasses
